Small Group Ministry for Holy Comforter July 2010 This is a small group ministry PowerPoint presentation to a congregation explaining the purpose and function of small groups. Its main goal is to encourage the congregation to start a small group ministry and follow through with it by devoting time and attention to it. It covers: (1)What a “Small Group” is—and is not; (2) The Five Purposes of Small Groups; (3) When and Where they meet; (4) A suggested Small Group schedule; (5) Why small groups are vital to this congregation; and (6) Recent experiences and acquired wisdom for small group ministry. How do Christians Interpret the World? In this educational experience, older youth or adults will view and reflect on two commercials with a social justice slant. They will engage in a seven step process of grappling with complex issues. ReadCreating a Facebook page for Small Group Ministry My final project is to create a Facebook Page for small group ministry at my teaching congregation, Holy Comforter Lutheran Church in Kingwood, Texas. The Facebook page is here. With Rick White’s help, I found helpful videos from Justin Wise's blog in two parts that explained the process: Deviant: Church & Culture. I highly recommend his excellent tutorials. The page is ready to host a daily schedule of posts and other news items when our small group ministry begins in October 2010. As Justin Wise suggested in his YouTube videos, daily posts should include conversation starters, devotions, prayers, Bible verses, and invitations to worship and small groups.
I also created a PowerPoint presentation for the congregation to view in order to encourage members and guests to join a small group and give it a try. This PowerPoint will also be posted here on feautor.org for viewing and use by others in small group ministry. This congregation experimented with small group ministry several years ago, but it was not a major success. Therefore, it will be important to recruit and equip the congregation for small group ministry with this new initiative, new enthusiasm, and determined follow-up communication.
